We like to look at celebrities as being the perfect role models, especially when it comes to relationships. Seeing couples like Beyonce and Jay-Z, we marvel and desire to have relationships like them. Yet, we don’t know half of what goes on behind closed doors. So, why are we so invested in celebrity relationships? Social media and oversharing might be to blame.

Social media’s impact

Being in the public eye is no walk in the park. When you’re a celebrity, your business is almost never private. For example, you can’t go an hour without hearing news about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s tumultuous relationship. Because of this, we find ourselves invested in celebrity relationships. We like knowing that they go through the same problems as us, and sometimes get excited seeing the drama that unfolds.

Although celebrity relationship drama can be kind of entertaining, it’s not healthy to look forward to these kinds of events. When we’re constantly keeping up with celebrity relationships, we lose a bit of ourselves and our reality. We either become obsessed with trying to have the same relationships or we feel obligated to judge their every move at any given second.

What about the women?

If there is any dysfunction in a celebrity relationship, we tend to put down the women for not noticing the red flags and leaving. For example, when Danileigh and Summer Walker went through their breakups, fans took to social media to critique these women and blame them for their failed relationships. What people forget is that a relationship is not self-reliant; it takes two people to create and maintain a healthy relationship. Giving women the sole responsibility of maintaining their relationships is harmful. It creates the idea that a woman must suffer to make her relationship work even if she’s dealing with abuse and/or neglect. It should not fall onto the woman to make a relationship work if it’s falling apart. When it comes to relationships, it is not solely one person’s responsibility to make sure the relationship is healthy and stable.

Celebrities are not our friends or family. They are human beings that have relationship issues just like the rest of us. It’s fine to admire a celebrity union, but not to the point where you indulge every aspect of the relationship. Remember, celebrities have their own life just like you.
