​Netflix has officially greenlit a pilot for a sequel to the iconic 1987 sitcom, A Different World. This new series will center on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she embarks on her own journey at a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

The original A Different World was a groundbreaking series that delved into the lives of Black students at Hillman College, tackling pressing social issues such as police brutality, gun violence, and HIV/AIDS. Its authentic portrayal resonated with audiences and left a lasting legacy.

Behind the Scenes

Felicia Pride, known for her work on Bel-Air and Grey’s Anatomy, will serve as the writer and executive producer for the sequel. Debbie Allen, a producer of the original series, is set to return to direct the pilot. Other executive producers include Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood.

A Rare Move by Netflix

Netflix’s decision to order a pilot is notable, as the streaming giant typically opts for direct-to-series orders. This approach allows the creative team to assess cast chemistry and the show’s tone before committing to a full series.

Casting is currently underway for Deborah and her peers, with characters expected to be in the 18-20 age range. The production team plans to start filming in June in Atlanta. Although producers haven’t confirmed Hillman College as the backdrop, fans remain hopeful for its return.
