The Las Vegas Raiders have made history by hiring Sandra Douglass Morgan, who is now the first Black woman to hold the title of President in the National Football League.

As a Las Vegas native, Morgan has strong ties to the city. She previously worked as North Las Vegas’s city attorney and was the first person of color to be chair of the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Morgan expressed how honored she is to be taking on this new role.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to join the Raiders at one of the most defining times in the team’s history,” she said. “This team’s arrival in Las Vegas has created a new energy and opportunities we never dreamed possible.”

The team brought Morgan on less than a year after former Raiders Coach, John Gruden, resigned after an investigation revealed emails from Gruden that included racial tropes and homophobic comments.

This is huge news, but this win also comes with the question, why are there still so many firsts for Black people in industries that have been around for decades? NFL leadership still remains staggeringly white despite about 70 percent of its players being Black, with only three Black men currently serving as head coaches. Hopefully, this is a step in the right direction that will lead to more diversity in the NFL.
