Recently rapper and Atlanta native, Omeretta released her single “Sorry Not Sorry” debating who is a true Atlantan. Since then, the buzz of what is considered Atlanta and what is not Atlanta send listeners on social media on a rampage.
Omeretta, better known as Omeretta the Great, gained her platform through SoundCloud and Instagram. The 25-year-old rapper released “Sorry Not Sorry” with a visual on February 18th and has been causing debates online since.
So, what is considered Atlanta according to Omeretta?
She goes into the song stating several Atlanta areas and also letting people know she is the “A” baby. The list of “Not Atlanta” goes like this: College Park, Lithonia, Clayco, Decatur, Gwinnett, Roswell, Forest Park, and Lilburn. Plus, the North and South areas including Dunwoody or East point.
This caused a debate online with Atlanta natives on Twitter and artists that have put Atlanta on the map in the music industry with deep roots in Atlanta. To be fair this includes a lot of well-known artists such as Monica, Ciara, Migos, and Ludacris to name a few. Although, she did not state every Atlanta area such as Bankhead or the Eastside of Atlanta some artists made the cut.
The tweets were piling up from “Atlanta Twitter”. Considering some people have been born and raised in the areas Omeretta called out, people think she has done entirely too much while others looked past it as a way to gain media attention for streams. All in all, Omeretta sparked a lot of attention and recently put out the remix featuring Latto.
In the remix, Latto goes on to ask who isn’t Atlanta. Latto calls out Ciara, 21 Savage, Migos, Ludacris, and shouts out where she’s from saying “Clay Co made Atlanta”. She later explains it wasn’t to cause controversy but just to say who has made Atlanta what it is today. We all know Latto has always made sure to let people know she’s the “Queen of the South” and has always shown love to her city. Omeretta having Latto on the remix was a perfect collaboration.
Since then, Omeretta has stepped into her spotlight and is going to continue to do so. The song served its purpose. It sparked attention and gave Omeretta her credit in the music industry too. Now before you visit or want to know what’s really Atlanta, make sure to ask Omeretta The Great first.
