Hurricane Maria restrengthened to a major hurricane early Thursday. After laying waste to Puerto Rico, the island has been left totally in the dark. Many are at a loss for words.

San Juan’s (the capital of Puerto Rico) Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said the devastation in the capital was unlike any she had ever seen.

“The San Juan that we knew yesterday is no longer there,” Cruz said. “We’re looking at 4 to 6 months without electricity” in Puerto Rico, which is home to nearly 3.5 million people.

In addition, at least 10 people have died in the storm. This includes seven in Dominica, two in Guadeloupe and one in Puerto Rico. This hurricane is the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico since 1932. Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey have already taken the lives of more than 100 people across the Atlantic, and that number is expected to rise.

Also, as Maria journeys across open Atlantic waters, it is expected to reorganize and gain strength. It is moving parallel to the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, heading toward the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeast Bahamas. Maria is not expected to threaten the United States mainland.
