Singer Daniel Daley and producer Nineteen85 are a righteous pair. They displayed this consensus on their debut album, Sept. 5th. In their introduction, Daley positioned himself the one with the immensely expandable voice and Nineteen85 nostalgic, yet transformative instrumentation. With their new project, Morning After, they don’t break too many rules. In this case, this interpretation is perfectly applicable and not an insult to their formula at all. The modern, dark sound they project is one of the best things in R&B as of right now. dvsn’s beautiful execution on many of the tracks results in of the best releases in the genre this year. As a member of Drake’s OVO Sound label, this group proved a second time their capability to emit lovely emotions through familiar concepts and scenarios.
The best part of Morning After is its audible euphoria. The collection of tracks generally sound good, and there are enough layers for them to have merit. It’s best to be described as futuristic forms of 90’s love songs. Daley’s vocal capabilities are comparative to favorite starlets of that heavily influencing decade. The way he sings of devotion to his lover rather than unfaithfulness is sentimental. One of the more impressive tracks, “P.O.V.”, contains a heavenly sample of “Fortune” by Maxwell. Daley matches his voice flawlessly as he sings of sexual positions.
“Keep Calm” is a highlight as well. Nineteen85 is a master of synths as he creates a perfect space for Daley to hit his gorgeous high notes. The track is mesmerizing and every syllable flows beautifully with the production. The masterful mixing of the vocals is vital. The clearness of sound throughout of the orchestrations adds to the appeal. No type of mumble rap/R&B hybrid can be found here.
Daley pictures himself as an honest individual throughout most of the songs. His motive is to be as tender as possible; leading the listener to as a strong state of lust.
Morning After is a clear indication that Drake is making the right choices for his label. dvsn placed themselves as a reliable choice for your R&B fix. With many singers going the alternative path, it’s pleasant to witness them sticking to their roots.
