The 50/50 split relationship conversation is one that we know all too well. Just when we think the subject’s been put to bed, it finds its way onto social media every few months. And, to be quite honest, we’re tired of talking about it. There are so many topics to talk about. Instead, our society keeps coming back to this one.

The concept of 50/50 is when significant others split rent, bills, and responsibilities equally down the middle. Although this is the initial consensus, people have their own ideas on how a partnership should look. Some feel that the men should pay the rent and the majority of the bills, while the women should handle the housework. Some share different sentiments.

For years, social media has played a pivotal role in how people conduct their relationships. They use the practices and standards they see on social media and try to apply them to their lives and relationships. However, the point of a relationship is to be able to rely on your partner financially and emotionally. You’re supposed to carry each other. Also, if we’re being honest, it’s time to stop basing what your relationship should look like on the ideals of others.

The 50/50 conversation reoccurred again when Gabrielle Union revealed she and Dwayne Wade split everything down the middle.

The topic again plagued social media when Gabrielle Union trended for a May 2023 interview with Bloomberg. In the interview, Union expressed how she and her husband, Dwayne Wade, split everything 50/50 in their household. 

“In this household, we split everything 50/50,” Union said. “But in the other households that each of us have to support, there’s always this like, gorilla on your back, that’s like, ‘You better work, b—h, you better work. Oh, you’re going to sleep in? You know, somebody might not eat … It’s hard to let that go. So, I’m working on that.'”

Many people have different opinions on what Union had to say. However, they should remember that they aren’t in the same situation as the millionaire couple. The actress received a lot of hate — and still catches strays to this day — but people fail to consider that Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade can’t be compared to the average couple. Union isn’t in a situation where she’s being taken advantage of. They both have more than enough resources to sustain them.

I wouldn’t look to a couple with more means as a valid prototype for my relationship — especially if we’re not in the same boat financially. Their situation doesn’t apply to mine. A true loving partnership goes beyond finances, and that’s where love needs to evolve.

This conversation needs to be left in the past.

Now that 2024 is in full swing, it’s time for new conversations. Set your own relationship standards. Figure out what 50/50 means to you. In this economy, I understand that circumstances can be different. Your partner may not always be able to hold most of the weight financially. I’ve had a few relationships where the dynamic switched up, and I’ve been on the lower end financially.

This is why it’s important to have these talks with your partner. Figure out what works best for both of you and learn to navigate your own relationships. As for this conversation, it has been argued about and talked about for far too long. We are officially retiring the 50/50 debate.
